Easy Homemade Chocolate Brownies

There's nothing better than a homemade chocolate brownie with a soft, fudgy centre and a slightly crispy top! This easy brownie recipe uses simple ingredients and is perfect for satisfying your chocolate cravings. Enjoy them on their own or serve them warm with a scoop of ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 200 g butter

  • 200 g dark chocolate

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup cocoa powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup chocolate chips (optional)

Method

Step 1: Prepare the oven

Preheat your oven to 180°C. Grease a square baking tin (approximately 20 × 20 cm) and line it with baking paper.

Step 2: Melt the chocolate and butter

Place the butter and dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Melt them together in the microwave in short intervals, stirring between each interval, or use a bowl over a pot of gently simmering water. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.

Step 3: Mix the wet ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the white sugar, brown sugar and eggs until well combined. Add the vanilla essence and mix again.

Step 4: Combine the mixtures

Slowly pour the melted chocolate mixture into the egg mixture, stirring until everything is combined.

Step 5: Add the dry ingredients

Sift the flour, cocoa powder and salt into the chocolate mixture. Gently fold everything together until just combined. If desired, fold in the chocolate chips.

Step 6: Bake the brownies

Pour the batter into the prepared baking tin and spread it evenly. Bake for approximately 25–30 minutes, or until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Step 7: Cool and serve

Allow the brownies to cool in the tin before cutting them into squares. This helps them set and makes them easier to slice.

Tips for Perfect Brownies

  • For fudgy brownies: Avoid overbaking them. The centre should remain slightly soft.

  • For a crackly top: Whisk the eggs and sugar thoroughly before adding the melted chocolate.

  • For extra chocolate flavour: Use good-quality dark chocolate and add chocolate chips.

  • For clean slices: Allow the brownies to cool completely before cutting them.

  • For a delicious twist: Add chopped walnuts, pecans or a swirl of peanut butter.
